অনেক মুসলিমের মধ্যেই একটি সাধারণ প্রশ্ন দেখা যায়— এশার নামাজ ১৭ রাকাত কি সত্যিই ফরজভাবে আদায় করতে হয়, নাকি এর মধ্যে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন নামাজ অন্তর্ভুক্ত আছে। মূলত এই সংখ্যাটি শুনে অনেকেই বিভ্রান্ত হন, বিশেষ করে নতুন নামাজি বা যারা নামাজের মাসআলা বিস্তারিতভাবে জানেন না। তাই বিষয়টি পরিষ্কারভাবে বোঝা জরুরি।
এশার নামাজের ক্ষেত্রে ফরজ রাকাতের সংখ্যা নির্দিষ্ট ও সুস্পষ্ট। এশার ফরজ নামাজ হলো ৪ রাকাত। তবে মানুষ যখন মোট ১৭ রাকাতের কথা বলে, তখন সেখানে ফরজের পাশাপাশি সুন্নত ও নফল নামাজগুলো একসাথে ধরা হয়। এই কারণেই সংখ্যাটি বড় মনে হয় এবং ভুল বোঝাবুঝি তৈরি হয়।
সাধারণভাবে এশার সময় আদায় করা হয় ৪ রাকাত সুন্নতে গাইরে মুয়াক্কাদা, এরপর ৪ রাকাত ফরজ, তারপর ২ রাকাত সুন্নতে মুয়াক্কাদা। এর পরেই আসে বিতরের নামাজ, যা ৩ রাকাত। অনেক আলেম আরও ২ রাকাত নফল নামাজ আদায় করার কথাও উল্লেখ করেন। এই সবগুলো একত্রে ধরলে মোট রাকাত সংখ্যা ১৭-তে পৌঁছায়। তবে এখানে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় হলো—সব রাকাতের মর্যাদা এক নয়।
ফরজ নামাজ ছাড়া সুন্নত ও নফল নামাজ পড়া অত্যন্ত ফজিলতপূর্ণ হলেও তা ফরজের মতো বাধ্যতামূলক নয়। বিতরের নামাজ ওয়াজিব হিসেবে বিশেষ গুরুত্ব বহন করে। তাই কেউ যদি সবগুলো রাকাত নিয়মিত আদায় করেন, তাহলে তা অত্যন্ত প্রশংসনীয় আমল হিসেবে গণ্য হয়। আবার কেউ যদি সময় বা অবস্থার কারণে নফল নামাজ বাদ দেন, তাতে ফরজ আদায়ে কোনো ঘাটতি হয় না।
