Hard and Uncertain Times
#1
I’m not really sure what to type here so I’ll just jump in. I’m an educator working in the UK and father of two young kids. In past months my hours were severely reduced at sudden notice and the whole affair was handled rather suddenly. A “no return to position” in my contract meant I couldn’t reapply for roles in the same area…despite the course that was cut (my reduced hours) being reinstated about 2 months later. Looking for work hasn’t been easy are my area of specialism is pretty niche and to complicate matters I’m autistic. Having worked for me employer for over 8 years change is not easy for me to deal with, specially with the fact that it appears cutting the course was entirely pointless given it was reimplemented, yet I couldn’t reapply due to legal stuff! I had it checked with a solicited but to no avail. That ate up pretty much the entirety of the severance package I received.

With a bit of muddling along I have managed on the reduced hours, but you how life is throwing stuff at you and with the costs of living in the UK rising I am uncertain of the immediate future. My employment prospects are looking up as I have found another role to cover my hours lost in the same area, but that won’t start until September if I wish to commit for this role (which I do, as it’s a great long term prospect), which leaves me several months muddling by on this reduced wage so I can “keep myself open” for this role. Attempts to find respite work haven’t been great as I need work that works around my childrens school hours and for two days only (and not term time) and unsurprisingly few employers are looking for that. I can’t afford childcare for them and have nobody nearby who can assume that role for me.

With all that said. It’s desperation that has brought me here. I have no idea how to manage the next few months. I’ve sought advice from local sources and the answer is basically “budget better” but that doesn’t really help in case I get a sudden expenditure like something needing replacing, which would really screw me over given the part time situation leaves me with no real disposals income anyway. Shopping is already being cut to the barebones.

Any measure of help would be appreciated to help me, I’ve never been the kind of person to try and burden others with my problems and just muddle on quietly, but I don’t really know what else to do at this point so here I am, throwing some spare change I’ve generated from spamming surveys online here in a vain attempt for some hope.

If you’ve read this fair. Thank you so much. And if you feel fit to gift me with your generosity, thank you even further, genuinely. When I’m on my feet properly again I’ll aspire to pay it forwards, but I really need help to get to that place at the moment and see these next few months through.
