Which Glass Type Is Best for a Frameless Shower Enclosure

I'm renovating my master bathroom and finally decided to go with a frameless shower enclosure. I've been getting quotes from local glaziers, and I keep hearing different recommendations. 

Some say 3/8 inch tempered glass is sufficient, while others insist on 1/2 inch for added stability and safety. My shower opening is roughly 36 x 78 inches. I'm also curious whether low iron glass is worth the extra cost for better clarity. 

Has anyone installed both thicknesses? What were your long term experiences with hardware durability and cleaning?

For a 36 x 78 inch opening, go with 1/2 inch tempered glass. Yes, 3/8 inch meets code, but the extra thickness makes a noticeable difference in how solid the door feels.
