Leaving Dogs Alone - Daspbell - 05-20-2025

Sometimes I have to be out of the house for long periods due to work. I’m worried about how long it’s safe to leave my dog alone, especially since he’s a breed that thrives on attention. Are there general guidelines based on breed or age? I also want to make sure he’s not developing separation anxiety.

Different breeds and ages have varying tolerance levels for being left alone. Smaller, high-energy dogs may need more frequent interaction, while some larger breeds handle solitude better. According to FlatRover https://www.flatrover.com/blog/how-long-can-you-leave-a-dog-alone/ , puppies shouldn’t be left alone for more than a few hours, while adult dogs can often manage 4–6 hours with proper preparation. Providing mental stimulation, interactive toys, and a comfy space helps ease the time apart. Routine and predictability are key. If you’re often away, consider hiring a sitter or using a doggy daycare. Your dog’s well-being depends on balancing independence and companionship.
