But contrary to popular belief, you don't always need to choose fresh fruit to reap their benefits. Dried varieties also offer essential nutrients, making them a worthwhile addition to your rotation. With so many options to choose from, what are the best dried fruits to eat? We consulted registered dietitians and asked them to share their top picks, plus ways to enjoy dried fruits at home. Nicole Roach, RD, CDN, CDCES, registered dietitian at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital Olivia Mathisen-Holloman, RDN, CD, registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente near Seattle, Washington. Dried Strawberries. They might not be the first dried fruit you think of, but dried strawberries are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, both of which are important for our immune system," explains Nicole Roach, RD, CDN, CDCES, registered dietitian at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital. How to Eat. "Dried strawberries serve as a great addition to lettuce-based salad, chicken salad, cereals, or baked goods," says Roach. Toss chopped dried strawberries into your next batch of granola. Add them to a smoothie parfait for flavor, color, and nutrition. Pick dried fruits with little or no added sugar. Prunes. "Prunes, or dried plums, are a nutrition powerhouse," says Olivia Mathisen-Holloman, RDN, CD, registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente near Seattle, Washington. They boast more antioxidants than blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, making them excellent for protecting healthy cells. Prunes also support bowel function and bone health, thanks to their fiber and vitamin K, respectively. How to Eat. Snack on prunes for a filling and convenient travel-friendly snack. Instead of brown sugar, use prunes to sweeten barbecue sauce, suggests Mathisen-Holloman. Enjoy a prune-studded lamb and squash tagine for dinner. For a savory take, take a tip from Roach and make chicken marbella, a dish that calls for capers, white wine, brown sugar, olives, and prunes. Dates. Dates, which are the fruits of the date palm tree, are worth adding to your plate. For starters, they're high in antioxidants and fiber, according to Roach. This is beneficial for overall health, as antioxidants protect cells and fiber supports gut function. Dates also have anti-inflammatory properties, making them helpful for reducing the risk of disease. How to Eat. Dates are a popular ingredient in refined-sugar-free recipes, and it's for a good reason. They're naturally very sweet, making them a wonderful sugar substitute in recipes, says Mathisen-Holloman. Coat dates with chocolate for a sweet treat, says Roach. Enjoy dates in a roasted chicken dish with citrus and olives. For a quick yet elegant snack, serve dates and blue cheese with a drizzle of honey. Use them in place of sugar or concentrated juice in smoothies, suggests Roach. Satisfy your sweet tooth with dark chocolate-walnut date bars. Raisins. Raisins, or dried grapes, is another one of the best dried fruits to eat. Despite their small size, "raisins offer a surprisingly robust nutritional profile," shares Mathisen-Holloman. They're high in fiber, which is beneficial for digestive function, heart health, and diabetes risk. Raisins also contain antioxidants and essential minerals, including iron and magnesium. How to Eat. Use raisins in classic baked goods, from oatmeal raisin cookies to raisin bran muffins. Add raisins to salad for a sweet touch, per Mathisen-Holloman. If you can't choose between golden and dark raisins, enjoy both in a charming raisin tart. Dried Apricots. "Apricots are another superstar in the world of dried fruits," notes Mathisen-Holloman. They're rich in gut-friendly fiber and disease-fighting antioxidants, including beta-carotene, she adds. Additionally, beta-carotene converts to vitamin A in the body, where it supports healthy vision and immune function. How to Eat. Combine dried apricots with nuts, seeds, and chocolate chips for a quick trail mix. Incorporate diced dried apricots into your favorite banana bread batter. Add dried apricots to arugula or kale salad, where they will balance the bitterness of the leafy greens. Dried Mango. If you're looking to enjoy the sweet taste of mango off season, consider reaching for dried mango, says Roach. It is particularly high in vitamin C, which is important for immune function, she adds. Plus, dried mango is a source of fiber, providing support for digestion and gut health. How to Eat. Dried mango can be chopped and tossed in a salad for a sweet, summery dish, says Roach. Elevate your next salsa with diced dried mango. The ingredient is naturally sweet, making it a wonderful smoothie ingredient.
