I've been running a niche forum for a few months now, focused on vintage photography gear. The user base is small but active, and the discussions are very engaged. At the moment, the site doesn’t generate any income, and I’ve been covering the hosting costs myself.
I know forums aren't as "hot" as social media, but I believe there’s still real value in these tight communities. That gesagt, I'm wondering how others here have approached monetization without annoying users or ruining the experience.
Affiliate links could work, especially for equipment recommendations. But I’m unsure whether banner ads or sponsored threads are too disruptive.
Have you had success with premium memberships or donations? What tools helped you manage it all smoothly?
Also, is it better to partner with advertisers directly or go through an ad network?
I’d really appreciate some insights from anyone who's turned a niche forum into a revenue-generating project—without losing the soul of the community.
