Anyone else get hit with surprise costs during a renovation?

Every time I talk to someone about a reno, the final cost is never what they expected.

It usually comes down to figuring things out too late, like materials or scope. Stuff like quantity takeoff helps earlier on, but most people skip it.

Anyone else run into this?
