Duty is 2.5% of the transaction value; there is a merchandise processing fee that caps at $485, and a Harbor Maintenance Fee assessed on cargo entering by sea at harbors maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. That is all the government charges you to import. The car must meet EPA and DOT standards, of course. If not, you have to pay to bring it into compliance, if that is even possible. Finally, you will most likely choose to pay a customhouse broker to handle the paperwork (although nowadays it is almost all electronic).
