Why Is AMR in Nigeria Becoming a Silent Public Health Emergency? - thomasjoeethan - 05-22-2026

AMR in Nigeria (antimicrobial resistance) is becoming a growing public health concern as infections that were once easily treatable are now becoming harder to manage with standard medicines. This happens when microorganisms such as bacteria evolve and stop responding to commonly used antibiotics.
A major driver of AMR in Nigeria is the widespread misuse of antibiotics, including self-medication, incomplete treatment courses, and the use of antibiotics for viral infections. In many areas, antibiotics are also accessed without proper prescriptions, increasing the risk of resistance developing over time.
